How to Decorate a Small Front Porch This Fall Video
The front porch is the first thing you see when you come to someone’s home. My small front porch needed an update with curb appeal but, I need to do it on a budget. A front porch needs to be nostalgic and inviting. Front porches have been used for leisure for years and a time used to spend outdoors.
A porch is an outdoor space even a small one, for socializing and resting in a the warm fall sun.
Today is a perfect day to finalize decorating for the fall and that means time to spruce this small front porch up. Yes, I know I am late to the game but, better late than never!
Of course, my front porch is not exactly what I want it to be; well that takes money and time but, in the mean time I wanted to spruce it up a little for the fall. With some simple items from my local thrift store and around my home and fresh coat of stain/paint my small front porch was transformed.
I wanted to keep my front porch simple and easy and not to dramatic I decide to include on my porch white mums, crocks, galvanized pails, plaid, and varies pumpkins.
Decorate a Small Front Porch by Giving it a Good Cleaning
First, thing I did this season is get rid of the old stain by stripping and power washing it. The deck was this ugly orange and I gave it a fresh coat of white paint on the rails and a deep brown stain on the floor.
This process of stripping and staining was not easy. Learning how to stain and strip is quite simple but, the process is very time consuming.
First, I rolled up my sleeves and recruit help from my family, I completely wash and sweep all the summer debris with vinegar and some baking soda. Next, after I thoroughly clean the front porch I began stripping it with a product from my local hardware store. I would recommend have proper eye and hand gear on such as goggles and gloves because the ingredients in this stripping products has not friendly to my natural farmhouse. This process of stripping took a couple of days and a lot of back breaking work. Stubborn stain I had to scrub off with a lot of muscles and the grace of God. I did this process about three times because I had several years of orange stain.
Once all my stain was removed I sand all the surfaces. I burrowed a power washer and cleaned the porch and let dry for a few days. Finally, I paint the porch with a chocolate brown floor and white on all the rails. The transformation was “mind blowing” and actually what I envision. Pro tip stain and paint your deck or porch when rain is not in the forecast to ensure it will dry well.
Decorating a Small Front Porch with Soft Textures
Once all my stain/paint dried completely it was time to move on to the fun part. Soft textures warm up any space including my small front porch. My front porch is nothing special and is pretty basic but, it craves warm and love. I added a plaid blanket which is actually a blanket scarf but, it worked! I love plaid anything especially in the Fall.
Plaid bring my joy and warmth. I add a black pillow and the owl pillow a few finds from years ago that I found while shopping my home. The blanket and pillows added a cozy, warm fall vibe to my small front porch this fall and sipping a warm spice wine or a hot cup a coffee bring all the cozy cottage core that is all the rage right now.
Add Color when Decorating a Small Front Porch this Fall
Color can make such an impact on any space especially if you space is neutral. To brighten up any space during any season add color to make a statement and popular during the season. Color is an alternative way, to incorporate a “eye catching” small front porch this fall. I decide to add mute colors this season with my mums and pumpkins with a palette of soft greens, blues and orange.
I love neutral and of course, I added white mums and pumpkins as well.
Sometimes it’s the simple things during the fall season such as pumpkins and mums, they make everything a little bit lovelier especially when the days are shorter and the nights are longer! I bought the mums from a local greenhouse and some of my pumpkins came from my garden and greenhouse.
Shopping within your community will make an impact and make a statement!
Decorate a Small Front Porch with Vintage and/or Antique Finds
A space in your home becomes personal when what you love is displayed. I am passionate about history and love to place vintage and antiques in my home and this includes outdoors when possible. I decide to decorate a small front porch this fall with some vintage and antique finds such as galvanized fishing pails, crocks and jack-o-lanterns.
I purchase my crocks from the Salvation Army and estate sales. I got my vintage inspired galvanized jack-o-lanterns from a local shop. The Galvanized pails were garage sale finds and a barn sale. Only add this that can with stand the autumn weather.
After you added vintage and/or antique finds do not be afraid to add some pumpkins, mums, corn stalks, etc.
Make sure you watch my video on details on my decorating and behind the scenes. My video will inspire you to not only decorate a small porch this fall but, it will help on the stripping, painting and staining process. You will not believe the transformation.
