Equipment Needed for Easy Sourdough Pizza Dough

Understand that you do not need fancy equipment with getting started with sourdough. I have created a list of sourdough items that I have bought and have been helpful through the years. In the beginning I use what I owned and eventually expanded. The most important thing when working with sourdough is to learn and practice with the live organism.

Bench Scraper is great to dividing, shaping and lifting dough from counter to bowls.

Large Bowl to preparing, mixing and creating sourdough breads and bake goods.

Spatula for mixing sourdough pizza dough and scraping dough out of the bowls.

Silicone Oven Mitts for removing sourdough focaccia bread out of the oven without burning your hands.

Cast Iron Skillet for baking sourdough pizza dough.

Kitchen Scale is needed to properly measure ingredients for Easy Sourdough Pizza Dough Recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 150 grams of active sourdough starter (make sure you feed your sourdough starter 8-10 beforehand)
  • 375 grams of lukewarm water
  • 300 grams of bread flour
  • 300 grams all-purpose flour
  • 14 grams of olive oil
  • 12 grams of salt
  • Olive Oil for greasing the bowl
  • Cornmeal for dusting

Directions:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the active sourdough starter, lukewarm water, olive oil, and mix until well combined. Next, gradually add the bread flour, all-purpose flour and salt to the mixture, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky but avoid adding too much as it can make the crust dense.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, drizzle with a bit of olive oil. Cover bowl with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it ferment at room temperature for ten hours, or until it has doubled in size. The exact time may vary depending on the temperature and activity of your sourdough starter.

Shaping Sourdough Pizza’s

Once the dough has doubled in size, gently punch it down to release the air bubbles. Divide the dough into desired portions for three to four individual pizzas.

On a floured surface, shape each portion of dough into a ball, then flatten and stretch it into a round pizza crust. Move around the circle to stretch the dough to ten to twelve inches around. You can also roll it out with a rolling pin if preferred.

Place the shaped pizza dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet or pizza peel dusted with cornmeal. Cover it loosely with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it proof for another two hours, or until slightly puffy.

Preheat your oven to 500°F and place a pizza stone, cast iron skillet or upside-down baking sheet inside to heat up.

Once the dough has proofed, take a spoon and spread pizza sauce on dough leaving about half inch from end. Next, add your desired toppings and cheese.

Optional add a flavor crust such as butter and garlic, then carefully transfer the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone, cast iron skillet or baking sheet.

Bake the pizza for twelve minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the toppings are cooked to your liking.

Enjoy the creativity and culinary adventure!

Troubleshoot Easy Sourdough Pizza Dough Problems

Why won’t my sourdough pizza dough rise? Usually, sourdough pizza dough does not rise because your dough did not have time to proof from the first step of combining the ingredients to letting it proof up to ten hours. I make my sourdough pizza the night before I need to use it has plenty of time to proof.

Can you overproof your sourdough pizza dough? Yes, you can overproof your pizza dough. Once your dough has double in size it is done proofing if you go longer, it can loss energy and deflate. What I do when preparing my sourdough pizza dough is make it the night before let is proof till morning. Then I divide dough into my balls and place in the refrigerator till I am ready to move on to the next steps.

Can you Freeze sourdough pizza dough? Absolutely you can freeze sourdough pizza dough. When you are at the steps of shaping into dough ball rub olive oil on ball and place in a freezer bag up to three months. Defrost and then proceed with the next steps.

Topping Suggestions for Easy Sourdough Pizza Dough

Pepperoni is typically made of pork but, there is turkey pepperoni if you are looking for less sodium. Try to find pepperoni that is not filled with Dextrose which is process sugar or Sodium Nitrite. Look for pepperoni that has very little ingredients and words that you can pronounce.

Red Onions have a sweet taste and, in my opinion, not a great taste for French onion soup. This bright onion is amazing raw and does not like to be cooked for a long time.

Basil smells amazing and is perfect in salads, tomato sauce and of course on top of sourdough pizza. This light green annual herb will create a fresh taste and lower blood pressure. Remember basil contains magnesium which will improve sleep, relaxation and blood flow.

Tomatoes are not liked by many but, the do help with heart health. Filled with many vitamins’ tomatoes are high in Vitamin C and A which will brighten skin, hair and nails.

Mozzarella Cheese and all cheese have a good amount of protein but, mozzarella has less sodium that other cheeses. Cheese has tryptophan which helps to regulate mood and reduce depression.
