Living on a tight budget is a reality in my home. Also, did I mention my schedule is a beyond busy however, I want a nice home that is easy to achieve and cheap. Sometimes a room in my home needs a refresh and I just want to change the room.

Well, on a budget a room can be change of course with paint but, lets change the curtains by adding trim for a designer look.

Browsing many high end home decor sites, I found a size, pattern and color that I want and with a few inexpensive curtains, material and patience I will sew a designer look on pennies!

Selecting the Fabric to Curtains for a Designer Look

First, you need to understand basic sewing skills and have an eagerness to learn. Keep in mind the size of the window you are adding your trim. Adding trim is not hard but, can be overwhelming if you never sewn before.

Also, if your trim fabric has a bold color or pattern, it will not work well in a small space. My home is small so I will choose light and a simple pattern.

Second, obtaining the best results for sewing trim on curtains is to choose decorator multi-purpose fabric instead of popular fabric used for other purposes.

Third, consider the material of the curtain such as light weight to heavy weaves. Trim and Curtain should flow and be similar in fabric weight.

Beginner Sewing Machine Stitching

For this project I am using a sewing machine. If you are a beginner sewer there are many options for sewing machines on the market that are affordable and easy to use by following the user manual that comes with the machine.

Sewing with a sewing machine offers many opportunities such as creating stitches from straight to zigzag.

We will be using the Straight stitch to sew trim onto your curtains. This stitch is simple and will link both fabrics together. Adjusting your tension and pressure will create stitches that are even and will not bunch up!

Selecting thread when sewing your stitches should be multi-purpose in either all-cotton or all-polyester in your coordination color of your envelope pillow.

Use the same thread when threading machine in the needle and bobbin.

Incorrect threading can cause a stitch to be too loose or to tight. Please, check with your user’s manual on how to thread needle and bobbin before starting to sew your Trim to Curtains for a Designer Look.

Beginner Tips to using a Sewing Machine

First, I want to say do not be nervous or intimated on learning to sew on a sewing machine. Every day I am learning and growing on techniques on how to use my beginner sewing machine. I did self-taught myself learning on a “hand me down” Viking and then moving on to my “beloved” Singer.

In today’s modern world Sewing Machines have developed and are more user friendly. Sewing machines are great for beginner sewers because they provide a professional look and saving time on your projects. Sewing Machine are very efficient and convenient to have in your home from hemming a pair of pants, updating a space or creating homemade gifts.

Research before buying a machine that will fit your needs. Check with local stores that provide services to sewing machine for maintenance and care about advice on the best machine that is user friendly, simple to repair and popular amongst new sewers. You want to choose a machine that is reliable and give a lifetime of perfect service. A machine should be selected on how readily supplies and services are available.

After selecting a sewing machine, it is up to you to keep with its upkeep. Make sure your sewing machine is clean and oiled for the best possible condition; this is determined by how much you use it. Regularly wiped your machine clean and always cover when not in use.

Supply List

Scissors are an investment that you will need. I like to have two pairs of sewing scissors; one for cutting material and the other just for clipping lose threads. Your cutting scissors should be about eight inches in length and heavy duty. I would purchase scissors that have a good warranty and excellent quality.

Pins are a necessity in beginning sewing. Your pins should be dressmaker pins and thin and sharp. Pins should not big; where they will leave pin hole in any fabric you are working with. Use seamstress pins to create accurate work and save time. I like using a pin cushion to place my unused pins into.

Needles need to be used in conjunction with your thread and fabric. Use a fine needle for fine threads and a heavier needle is needed for strong material.

An Iron is important for all your sewing projects especially this work apron with pockets to create a finish look.

An electric iron is an option because, it heats up quick and retains its heat.

I like using an iron in between sides that I sew to smooth the fabric and give a finished look.

Tape Measure are important to sewing because we measure everything when there is cutting and sewing involved.

Your work must be accurate, and a tape measure will be your best friend in achieving a tailored work apron with pockets.

I like to use a tape measure ribbon because it is easy to store and very versatile for my needs such as measuring bust, waist, and hips.

Thread just like a needle needs to be purchase in a coordinating color of the material you are working with. You want your thread to blend with the colors within the material.
