How to Create a Cheap Front Door Entrance Make Over
First, in any space I am redecorating, organizing or refreshing I love to de-clutter, and give the area a good cleaning. I de-cluttered all the winter items and added some summer components such as flip flop, rain boots, sun hat and light coats along with pillows.
Second, I thought add a light and neutral window dressing would give the space more breeze and calm feeling. I purchase all four of these panels at Walmart they were the “Better Home and Garden” brand. Two of the panels were sheer white to bring in a nice summer breeze and the other two panels were that I had them up for a while in a light brown give a light and airy feel. I feel just a simple change of curtains already brightens the room.
Third, any excuse to get my sewing machine out is a great way to refresh a space. I made some new pillow covers using thrifted material I found at my local Salvation Army and made a ribbon to go around my boxwood wreath using the same material.
Fourth, Cleaning or buy a new rug for your entryway is a great way to get rid of the old and add some new. I bought this vintage inspired rug, and it was affordable.
Finally, I refreshed my front door by refreshing it by paining and staining it. The English Oak really create a cozy and vibrant space.
Next, I added pretty much anything that screams spring I added wreath, a vintage church I already own along with a plant inside a crock I pulled from another room.
Cheap Popular Front Door Styles
Nowadays in market there are many front door options to buy such as pre hung or a “slab door”.
A pre hung door is what it means it is ready to go! A pre hung door comes with attached hinges and door jams. Sometimes a pre hung door is paint, stain and requires nothing else to maintain it.
A “Slab Door” comes with nothing and may need paint or stain. Nonethless neither come with any character let alone a doorknob!
When I bought my house, it came with a Front Door that was a “Slab Door” and because of this we are making it over to create a look of a wood door cheaply.

Prepping a Cheap Front Door Entrance
1.) Clean your front door with a brush and mixture of dish soap and warm soapy water. When cleaning the front door make sure you remove any dirt, mildew or debris.
Rinse the front door with clean warmwater and dry completely.
2.) Sand the front door with three hundred grit sandpaper. Sand all rust spots and imperfections. Wipe sanding crumbs away with a slightly moist cloth and allow it to dry.
3.) Remove all hardware including door’s handles, doorknobs, knockers and kick plates. If you cannot remove hardware from your front door than tape with painter’s tape.
4.) Now is the time to use painters’ tape and tarps to protect all areas you do not want to paint such as windows, peep holes, siding and trim.
Steps on Creating a Cheap Front Door Entrance Make Over
Step One: Shake and Stir the Base Coat of Stain. I am using English Oak! Pour Base Coat of Stain into a roller tray. Use a 2-inch angle brush and apply the Base Stain to all the three-dimensional surfaces of the front door entrance.
Next, take a six inch roller and roll the base stain to all the front door surfaces. Take the angle brush, apply right to left or left to right the base stain.
Pay attention to any drips or pools of paint. Step back and look at your work especially as the hour passes. Allow stain to dry after two hours before moving on to step two.
Step 2: This is the time to apply the Wood Grain Stain over the base Stain. Apply the Wood Stain in the opposite direction of the base coat. For Example, if you applied the base stain up and down then apply the wood stain side to side.
Give the Wood Grain Stain a good shake and stir; pour into a tray. Take a stain mitts and dampen with water. Give stain mitt a good squeeze to release all extra water. Use the staining mitt to apply the woo stain to the front door entrance.
When using the staining mitt to the door apply stain in a long stroke. Smooth the stain as you go avoid pools of stain and drips. Do not apply to many strokes over the same are because if will not look good. If you miss a spot do not worry you can fix with another layer later.
Once the wood stain has been applied to the entire door wait thirty minutes and apply second coat. Decide if you want two or three coats for wood stain for your front door entrance.
Allow the door to dry for two hours before closing it to ensure the hinges does not stick.
Tips on a Cheap Front Door Entrance Make Over
- Once you are done staining your front door it will be tack free after two hours.
- After twenty-four hours your door will be completely dry but, it will take seven days to cure. Do not hang or clean door until seven days.
Clean all equipment you such as rollers and brushes with warm soapy water. - When staining your room should be properly ventilated to avoid breathing issues or irritants.
- Only use mild soap and water when clean your front door entrance.
